Font Colour for Guides

Kizr's picture

Hey, I just made a Steel guide that needs a lot more work yet, but I was wondering if you could add the ability to change the font colour in the guides so that it's easier to highlight important information and differentiate better :)

@Kizr, Hey there. It will definitely be done and most probably today. There will be a section to highlight text by a quote (putting it in a separate highlighted box) and font color.

I'll be looking forward for your further updates. It's the 1st guide for the Big Guy :)

Oh excellent, that's great to hear thanks!

It is indeed the first guide, though I've realised it's a little harder to make guides for Paragon because there's so many cards to contend with! It's not nearly complete yet, I've a lot more to add and when I get home I'll be adding my bruiser/tank hybrid deck and play style :)

Sorry for the double post, I've also noticed some issues with the image formatting, they appear on way in the preview and then proceed to lose all settings when it comes to saving the guide :)

@Kizr, I'm with you on this cards diversity. Though in the end you have not more than 40 and IMHO you can skip duplicated ones (e.g. upgrades). So the  final amount will be pretty manageable.

BTW if you have good suggestion on how this can be possibly improved then you know that you are welcome.

As for the image formatting - what are the styles that you are trying to apply? I see you have successfully added Heroes images into the guide so I'm not sure I understand that issue now.

BTW if you could send me a screenshot from PS4 that shows icons  like here http://i.imgur.com/6aMVLMn.png I'd add them to the guide.

I can do you one better as EPIC released them all perfectly rendered here!

They match up to be:

LMB - R2

RMB - R1

Q - Square

E - Circle

R - Triangle

Pretty sure anyway, could be wrong but that's the one!

Image formatting wise, they look OK, but if you double click one and change the size or alignment, it'll work on the preview but when you hit save and view the guide the formatting you set doesn't save.

For example if I wanted a heroes name next to their picture, I can do that on the editor and view it in preview, but as soon as I hit save and look at the guide the names go below because the formatting is lost, if that makes sense? I can grab you some screen shots if you want?

As for improvements to the card management, the quick select options are good and the feature I have in mind would take a lot more work sadly, but I imagine having a search box and the images for the cards available (full card art is here) and then make an interactive list, probably an array which you can quickly drag to and save.

Likewise the cards could use some form of support for selection - e.g. against physical users build this first, against energy users build that first, that doesn't have to be complex, but some way to add text would be great. Maybe a note that appears on hover?

PS4 controls are correct.

Oh god 4 posts in a row, sorry, feel free to merge them, I just can't edit my previous posts and thought of something else!

Card selection could use a basic deck and custom deck selection, the basic decks could be pre-populated with the cards to choose from which mirror the in-game choices so that there's always an option for new players and then a custom deck that you can build yourself, looking something like this?

It's quick and dirty, I know and more work for you, but I feel this would be a quality of life change and make the site a lot nicer to work with and helping it get more attention :)

@Kizr, don't worry with sequential posts. It's OK.

So replying in order:

  1. Image formatting and font color should now work correctly. Presented in an example here. A highlight with quotation works now as well so you can visually emphasize important sections of the guide or useful hints.
  2. As far as PS4 is concerned. A correct mapping was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
  3. As for the cards searing, full card art and so on. Unfortunately that press kit is not up to date. I have more recent images of cards. And I purposefully didn't want to capture an entire card to avoid UI overload with images. even the way it is done now I feel card images are too big. Though no one yet complained.
As for adding support text for cards. I'm trying to keep in mind users with mobile devices (since I was often loading a guide on my phone while playing a game on PC). So some relevant text should not probably be hover-triggered. I see you are already using a text field for each card-set is that somehow not enough for what you are looking for?
  4. And lastly about decks and pre-population. Not mentioning that it is gonna be challenging from implementation standpoint I don't feel I get what would be the value of doing this. Other than it will be more visual to the guide creator of course :) You are right it's an important point. We can probably have this discussion in detail on Discord (nick George). I'd prefer not to type a lot when it's better to talk :)

PS

Good feedback I appreciate this.

The updates are awesome George, thanks for putting those in, I'll be sure to make use of them when I update my guide next! :P

Yeah understandably it makes sense to think about a mobile first approach, as any web developer in their right mind would, it was just a suggestion for the future of the site depending on traffic and such, if it gets to be a bigger community in the near future such features may give it the edge on competitors, I don't know if the MOBAfire network is considering creating a Paragon site but that would rival yours and they'll likely implement such features, though as it stands this is the only build site I know of so that's great! :)

I did use the text feature to it's full advantage, my concern was that it didn't fit on one page for my monitors, I dual screen and tend to have a guide open on one and the game on the other, so I don't like scrolling to see what I need to know but that's my personal preference and to be fair since I do play on PS4 I'll likely be using my mobile in any case so you're right lol!

Anywho I've got some work things to take care of but I'll be checking in tomorrow :)

George's picture

@Kizr, Yep I was also looking for MOBAfire as an example. They have a good background and they have community and  they have "brand". But we will see how it goes. I'll be thinking about this improvement in the long-term.

As for the text - it might be an option to create a separate additional field below or near each card-set but again. What I was having in mind is this couple of rows you see 1st - in future all cards will have unique images so you can understand the deck at a glance and probably will go to the text if you have any specific interest on details about the build. A kind of an approach - important things goes 1st with as less text as possible.

This is my personal opinion and having feedback like your is essential.

I went threw and read all of this, I'm interested in starting to make guides and and other posts but i don't know how to set it up and this post helped a lot!

@TheRealBroheim, cool.

Do we need to "promote" the markup example more? I thought it would be enough to present it right above the editor where you do your guide. Let me know.
